Life of Hunny and Bunny

Hey there! Don't forget to check my location before you read it. As I am going to share my first month experiences with the pets Hunny and Bunny. However depending upon your location the various things involved in their upbringing may vary.

One fine October morning, I was gifted two baby rabbits by one of my friend. I went almost 80 km by bike to bring them. At that time the weight of one of them was almost 200 gm and the other a little bit more. As this will be my first time experience with rabbit, I was quite unsure whether I will be able to handle them well or not.

Now, guys let's not waste your time and come to the main point. I mean the information you are seeking. 😊

What to give them to eat?

I have been giving them grass in the morning. They don't eat all types of grasses. Also they eat only the soft portion. During the day I have been giving them cauliflower leaves, cucumber and cabbage and in the evening I have been providing them soaked gram. Here in my region this is the period of  "KONGALI" that means it is the scarcity period. So, sometimes I fail to give them grass. However I have been planning to sow some grass in my own home campus sufficient for them. And the most important thing I provide them is a bowl of water. Two glasses of water is sufficient for them per day.

Where I have kept them?

Well the first 20 days, I have kept them in a cube sized bamboo house of sides 60 cm each. Meanwhile they have cut the bamboo sticks with their teeth. Soon a whole was about to be seen . They have created danger for themselves that means. I mean a predator and here it is a cat or a dog.

But as they were gaining weight and size I have recently made them a big house of wood. I have covered the entire house wall with aluminium mesh coated with plastic. So, don't use any plastic net otherwise they will cut that too. These are easily available in the market. As I already have wood and the roof tin in my house so to make it including aluminium mesh, some wooden beats, nails and the making charge of the carpenter cost me around 2000 rupees.

How I taking care of them?

See, now the problem of predator is solved. Mainly if cats and dogs are around, then you can't set them free. So, whenever I set them free I remain beside them for the time. At least daily 20 minutes I have been allowing them some running and hopping. I am also trying to make my terrace suitable for them so that they can run and hop at will without fear of cats. By the time they grow up I will manage that also. Only their urine has a pungent smell. Till now I haven't given them any bathing experience. I only change the floor mat daily washing it and replacing it every alternate days. This is necessary as by the end of the day the floor mat becomes flooded with their dung.

The urine however settles at the bottom on sandy soil as the floor is also made with the aluminium mesh. So its not a blocked one. During the night hours I am not giving them anything as they should sleep. To protect them from cold, a box with some velvet clothes is given inside the cage. At night I have surrounded their house with curtains to protect them from the chilling wind.
Finally my confusion is over today on 20 November 2020, as I saw both of them mating. So, Bunny is a male and Hunny is a female.
